Dior DiorSkin Nude Foundation in 010 Ivory

Part One for Build*A*Look #1: Backlit Beauty
DiorSkin Nude is a great line of products, so if you're interested in certain texture (you like powder over cream or liquid, etc.) you can pick and choose what best appeals to you. This is the one that strongly appealed to me a few months ago, and became my only foundation over Christmas break at my Mom's. This foundation has light to medium coverage and neutral undertone. In fact, this was the only Dior liquid foundation I could get because it comes in this ultra-light, fair tone.

I find this liquid neutralizing; as opposed to looking unlike your skin tone it makes your skin look more neutral, naturally. It is this lovely quality which helps me pull off cooler colors when I want to try new things without looking like I don't know what fits my skin tone. Since I really want a good product like this in my kit as a makeup artist, I will probably be investing in the whole range as I can.

Build A Look #1: Backlit Beauty

Apparently, when book-learning goes up for me, photography skill goes way, way down. I guess I'll just have to call this week's Build-A-Look "Backlit Beauty" because I can't seem to take a decent picture for the life of me today!

So here it is...Backlit Beauty includes the following products:
Dior DiorSkin Nude Foundation in 010 Ivory
Dior DiorSkin Nude Concealer in 001 Ivory
Lotus Bio-Mineral Cream-Powder Blush in Apricot
Dior DiorShow Brow Styler in Universal Brown
Lotus Certified Organic Eyeshadow Palette in Deluxe
Aveda Eye Definer Pencil in 910 Sepia
Kirkland Signature Lash Defining Mascara in Black
Aveda Lipstick in Mandarin

This week's gonna be a big one at Aveda Institute Columbus: we have a special treat, a MAC Cosmetics presentation of two hours tomorrow, for starters. We are also  learning anatomy this week, so I'll be pretty busy with flashcards, diagrams, and homework (or rather homeplay).

How's your week looking? Anyone in favor of me extending this week's posts in order to get my Giveaway together? I know I haven't done review posts of Lotus yet, but so far from using the products I got myself, I know you're gonna want 'em--and love 'em. All in favor, say GIVEAWAY!

Beautiful in Every Way - Burberry Sheer Compact Foundation

This product review was later updated/expanded in this post.
$55.00 for 0.28 oz.
Well, I'm exhausted. I have officially completed my first grueling week at the Aveda Institute Columbus, and the most difficult thing about it was having to wake up so early. I could already tell by this morning that I am slowly adapting; by the end of next week I probably won't even notice because my internal clock will be correct. However, the most unfortunate part of the schedule has to be that all daylight hours are over on campus in class, so taking pictures in good light for different products is impossible. The dusk is spreading when I open the door to walk to my car--there's no way around that (hence crappy product picture above). For these next five, now four, weeks I will thus have severe difficulties trying to do a post a day. Instead I will try to put together looks over the weekend that involve multiple products to review and then write during the week. Sorry, though, I will give up an entry or two to catch some zzzz every now and again. I think you'll survive! :)

To kickstart a return to blogging, I get to tell you all about a particular gem from my favorite designer, Burberry! As you know, I heart Dior somtin' fierce, but I am more attracted to plaid than any normal human should be. "Pretty colors" is what generally goes through my head, and the Nova Check just plain speaks to me, saying "Anie, you look and feel beautiful today" with wavy, gypsy hands of hypnosis. Since Burberry put an embossed check are every piece of the packaging for the Compact Foundation in today's post. Simply put, I love it, but read on for specific details.

In related news to that, my budget for getting new products has been cut drastically to afford tuition, etc. so at some point I may actually not have a new product for everyday. As I learn more about makeup application and skin care, I will be sure to share posts of that nature, but that won't be for another few weeks. In the meantime, enjoy every post to the fullest as I always hope you do!

Serum Saturday: philosophy When Hope Is Not Enough Facial Firming and Lifting Serum

$38.00 for 1.0 fl oz. or $87.50 for 4.0 fl oz.
About a year ago, yet another acne system started to fail after roughly 6 weeks of decent results. The blemishes didn't come back worse, but they did come back seemingly more painful. Then the frequency went down when I switched to a sensitive skin cleanser, but there were still several coming in every day. It's weird to have found something that works since then, but one key thing that helped heal the old scars and quicken the recovery from the new blemishes was the philosophy No Makeup Kit, which included this serum.

I know that it's targeted for aging skin, but lifting and firming are done mostly through stimulating the regeneration of skin cells. My scars healed faster, which was the point, so I know for a fact that this does something. I can't attest to its efficacy in lessening wrinkles and fine lines, but I can tell you that it speeds cellular regeneration in order to improve your skin. Healing is good; vitamins are really good too. So this power-packed formula is worth it since I have finished my second bottle already!

A Wash of Bright Champagne -Pixi Fairy Solo No 2 Champagne Glow

$14.00 for 0.08 oz.
This post in particular has been a long time coming, but it is worth it in many ways. Sometimes we makeup junkies wake up not giving a flying rat's fart in space about putting on our "face" for the day. Well, this little baby makes those days a little easier for me. Some Pixi products are just ok instead of great for me, but I still use them. Each serves their purpose, like the Endless Silky Liner and the Lip & Line Pen, and it's the same with Champagne Glow.

Fairy Solos are single eyeshadows that have more than the average amount of product in a little, clear-topped compact that has no mirror or applicator. Because of this, I don't find it ever leaving my vanity for a spin out and about, but in some sense there is no need to take it with you. With a good primer/base, as I must have for my oily lids, this shimmery neutral lasts all day. I like to put a matte brown on top to dim the shimmer at the crease but keep the light on the lid.

First Look - Lotus Certified Organic Makeup Haul

Lotus Certified Organic Makeup: Powder, Cream Blush, Eyeshadow Palette, Lipstick, Lip Gloss, and Mascara
Finally the UPS truck rolled around and it was worth the wait!!! You'll be hearing more about Lotus the brand and these individual products, but I really wanted some others to drool over these gems with me. I am so ready to stick my brushes in everything, but I can't, especially because SOME OF IT IS FOR A GIVEAWAY!!! Yeah, baby, free stuff.
Giveaway! Roseberry Lipstick, Black Mascara, Clear Lip Gloss, and Rose Cream Blush
Giveaway coming soon! Please look out in the next week or two for my first giveaway, and I'm making it all organic, simple, but all you need to pop color on your lips and cheeks and brighten your eyes. Bam! It's perfect, directly from the earth!

Clinique High Impact Mascara in Black/Brown

$14.50 for 0.28 oz
Oh, guys, you know those days where not a single neuron is firing in the ol' noggin? That was yesterday for me, big time. No cognitive function whatsoever, so I hope the posts turned out okay. I might go back and give 'em a once over today to make sure at least parts of them made sense because really only 70% of blogging should make sense. That's the fun of it!

So, today's story is about finding a non-black mascara. I was in the Fox Hills Mall in Culver City searching and searching, finally walked into a Macy's and went to my tried and true Clinique counter. Bam! The SA had it in my hands in less than a minute; the conversation went a little like this...

"Hi, I am looking for a brown or brown-black mascara."

"Ok, are you looking for length, volume..." Note: this is the first response I've gotten in the whole mall that wasn't "oh, sorry, no."

"I have pretty long lashes, so probably more definition and volume."

"Sure, we have High Impact Mascara in Black/Brown." She goes back, opens a drawer, whips out a little box, and opens it for me so I can see the color. Perfection.

"I'll take it!" Done deal, and now, to introduce to you one of my staples.

If you don't have black hair and lashes, I think you should own at least one mascara that isn't jet black. Most day looks will work fine with black mascara unless you're going for a very subtle look of just my-face-but-accented; that's when you need a nice non-black mascara. This one is mine.

Yes, I Like Simplicity - Pixi Lip & Line in Fresh Pink

$18.00 for 0.051 oz
I'd like to start by calling this product on some BS, as I consider it. On the packaging is a blurb that reads:
"This anti-aging, stay-on lipstick & lip contouring, anti-feathering liner is our ultimate lip must-have. Keeping to our Pixi tradition to simplify and beautify, this lip duo makes life so much easier. Never again will you have to try to match you lip liner to your favorite lipstick or vice versa. Contains Vitamin E & C to treat and protect lips."

First, I doubt (but cannot prove) that this lipstick has any anti-aging properties. Second, it's true that these lippies match up perfectly, but whether there are enough colors for you to be satisfied or that look right on you is another story. Third, and this wasn't stated in the description but by the blurb from Petra, the lines designer, these may be long lasting but are not "very moisturizing;" this Lip & Line could actually be the most drying or dry-feeling lippie I own. All that said, I really like this.

NewsFlash: Dior Skinflash Could Double As A Highlighter and Concealer!

$36.00 Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen
Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen could be described as something I was extremely skeptical about purchasing; truth be told I was ready to return this is an instant should it not meet my every expectation. Maybe it did, maybe it didn't in terms of my original hopes, but it's proved to be quite useful in other ways too.

I purchased Candlelight (I have no idea why because the colors are so vague on every site) first with the intention of finding an easy highlighter for the brow and cheek bones. Instead, I found something infinitely better that I hadn't really noticed I was looking for: undereye brightener and concealer.

Aveda Nourish-Mint Rehydrating Lip Glaze in Raspberry Tea

$18.00 for 0.24 oz.
Not a bad Tuesday, to be honest. I don't think taking a shower in the morning has felt so refreshing in a long while, meaning I was either too stinky for my own good or I got decent sleep last night. I'm hoping it was good sleep because otherwise my boy is way too nice on Valentine's Day. So what is the best thing I wore on V-Day--why it's this gloss right here!!
Aveda Nourish-Mint Lip Glaze in Raspberry Tea

Yes, it rehydrates, and better than any gloss or lipstick I've tried ever. I hadn't even noticed how frequently I was reaching for this until I found a tiny bit of transfer on almost all of cups and mugs I had to wash of this very color. And as little transfer as I ever saw from my glosses too! It's insane how quickly this gloss (or glaze, as it's called) is just my go-to without any effort. Supposedly this will thoroughly recondition your lips in eight weeks...but I'm pretty sure it's done that in less than two for me...

Beat the Frost with Summer - Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick in Summer Angel

Rimmel Summer Angel Moisture Renew Lipstick SPF 18
This, ladies and gents, was a pleasant surprise I brought back from CVS several months ago. I wore it constantly for a month or so and then tried to push the box and go a bit darker for fall and winter. I didn't ever get much darker but more moved on to obsessive collecting of new products. Tons of new stuff later, I am again surprised when revisiting this.

First, the awesome: the color of this is a rosy beige with silver-frost finish and this lasts about 3-4 hours on me. My lips do feel moist while I wear it, but they don't feel moisturized after this lipstick wears off. In that sense, it doesn't seem to be imparting any moisture into my lips, just on top of them.

Brilliant Bronze for Cheeks & Eyes - Estée Lauder Signature Bronze Shimmer Palette

$36.00 for 0.35 oz.
With e.l.f. Week over, I'm really trying to stay on top of the reviews; I can barely decide what to review each day, plus I'm going to need to stick with drugstore brands for a while (budget and all). Yet, I still have a few gems to show you, like this multi-tasker extraordinaire! Estée Lauder Signature Bronze Shimmer Palette is a huge win for me, not perfect, but going to last and be used for many things. I use this for blush, bronzer, and eyeshadow, and the five shades are very neutral, not cool or warm so it's good for all. Seriously consider this if you'd like bang for your buck and space in your makeup drawer!

Kirkland Signature by Borghese Sheer Mineral Foundation Set

$21.99 for 1.0 fl oz Foundation, 0.42 oz Concealer, and 0.14 oz Finishing Powder
If any of you know of Borghese, the brand that does the Kirkland Signature makeup formulas, you will know that it is lower-high-end in price ($38 for foundation alone on average) but fantastic  in quality. I love pretty much everything Costco does...especially Kirkland Signature by Borghese. Haven't found a makeup or skincare product that didn't blow me away, whether by quality or quantity by price! For example, this set from the warehouse...
Kirkland Signature by Borghese Mineral Sheer Foundation SPF 20 in Fairly Light
This foundation has SPF 20 for sun protection during the day, blends smoothly (even though the color isn't a perfect match), and wears well with setting powder for over 8 hours. It has sheer to medium coverage, depending on how much you can use to keep it in line with your skin tone, but it is buildable. I like this about as much as my LORAC foundation, the difference being that the LORAC is lighter and matches my winter color better so layering works. This is going to be a huge staple for the summer; the color shown is Fairly Light.

I Almost Forgot! e.l.f. Daily Brush Cleaner and Brush Shampoo

e.l.f. Studio Daily Brush Cleaner and Brush Shampoo, $3 each
To be indiscreet, GET THESE, GET THESE, GET THESE. Now, onto an actual review of them.

These are unmissable tools that I forgot mostly because I use them without thinking about brand or color or anything, but I have to mention how amazing these work. First of all, washing your makeup brushes can be a pain in the butt that doesn't seem so necessary until it really is. When I think of washing brushes, I think of paint, which is creamy or liquid, I think of how you dip the brush in water first or you soak it to keep it "fresh" to use. If you're like me, most, if not all, of what you use brushes for is powder, so needing to wash them frequently seems tedious and unnecessary.

A Glowing Spotlight and Standing Ovation for e.l.f.'s All Over Color Stick in Spotlight

e.l.f. All Over Color Stick in Spotlight
This I prefer to the Shimmering Facial Whip in Spotlight. The All Over Color Stick ($1) is much thicker and creamier than the Whip formula, but I would say both are easily blended and useful in their own way. This stick form is simply easier to use in small amounts with big pay off since blending out a liquid means thinning out the pigment too.
e.l.f. All Over Color Stick in Spotlight
I use this strictly as a highlight, usually around the top of the cheek bone, sometimes on the nose bridge and brow bone, but always this blends out to a subtle pop of light at all the right points. My first thought when I handled the packaging was that it seemed inconvenient, though I now find it useful. An artist could easily use this by swiping some onto the back of the hand, but us normal appliers could just as quickly use a finger to warm up some product directly from the tube and dab it onto the desired areas. I use both methods; universally, I need to warm the product by rubbing my finger in it for a few seconds.

Lip Define & Shape Pencil from e.l.f. - Another Miss or Just Missed Me?

Day eight of e.l.f. Week...yeah, I can count. So far, you'll realize I am a big fan of e.l.f. products because you can really get an incredible result without killing a budget, which feels really satisfying if you're a hard-core beauty fan. Honestly, it's quite satisfying if you're a fan of just putting a bit more life into a look for work or day or night or whatever...

...This doesn't seem to be one of those products. First, because for me lip liners are rubbish (usually). Second because this dual-ended pencil is no different. Third because this is not only a product that doesn't look quite right but it does not wear well after about 15 minutes.
Shape on left, Define on right in daylight
Shape on left, Define on right with flash
The two ends of this pencil are Shape (called Nude, a pink with golden sheen) and Define (called Natural, a slightly plumed rose with rosy sheen), but neither stands out as particularly natural. The heavy sheen makes this feel very noticeable.

$?$?$? e.l.f. Studio Lip Lock Pen$?$?$?

At $3 I don't know what to make of this one. Guys, seriously, I have no idea whether this works or not. I don't use lip liner often, and I also don't wear dark lipstick so frequently either. After using the Lip Lock Pen upwards of a week, I couldn't tell whether I was seeing less smearing because I was trying to pay attention to whether there was any or because the product was working.

I feel kinda useless for this review, so I will be sure to keep trying, though I can't promise I will ever notice the effects of this product. (I find that the e.l.f. regular Lipsticks stay in place exceptionally well, and the Mineral Lipsticks don't migrate unless it's something that wouldn't be resisted by this type of product.)

Glitz and Glamour and Fine Manners - e.l.f. Studio Blush in Fuchsia

e.l.f. Studio Blush in Fuchsia
In the most objective light, e.l.f. Fuchsia was both a shock and disappointment for me. I warn you now that this is for personal reasons, such as I am not a great fan of glitter and bright pinks are a bit out of my comfort zone. Yet I purchased this, why? I was trying to recreate the look of Chanel's Holiday 2010 look which had Tweed Fuchsia for cheeks. So e.l.f. Fuchsia seems like a great substitute for that $45 blush at $3, right?

Sure, and I still think it is a great find. The glitter threw me for a loop when I first saw it. "No way in hell I can actually wear this," was most likely the first thought to come to mind, but look at the swatches real quick:
e.l.f. Studio Blush in Fuchsia blended on left, unblended on right in daylight
Fuchsia is not that scary when blended. The glitter doesn't completely saturate the product, so if you apply it carefully, it should look more like an accent than your face--covered in glitter--
e.l.f. Studio Blush in Fuchsia blended on left, unblended on right with flash

e.l.f. Natural Radiance Blusher

e.l.f Natural Radiance Blusher in Flushed
I really look forward to getting more of these. This blush is better than my Chanel blush for the facts that it's not scented and powders up less when you're picking up product. In fact, the blush is dense in it's little case, so I need to work my brush around a bit to get the color I'm looking for. This blends flawlessly though. Effortlessly. For serious. And in the photo above I have used it many times without making a dent in the ridge-print, meaning there is clearly a lot more than meets the eye to work with. I think I like this blusher better than the Studio line ones because this type has a much subtler sheen (as opposed to glitter).

Shimmer Me Timbers- e.l.f.'s Shimmering Facial Whips are Super Versatile and only $1!

As a relative 'noob' to the cosmetic world, I have been struggling to find my place on the grand scale of how much shimmer I actually like on my face and skin. To be honest, big glitter and super shine are NOT my cup of tea, and drama make-up is a very rare occurrence outside of my front door (for me, but shh, I do it in secret...for practice...yes, practice only). Though I also have found a deep and passionate love for Chanel and Dior (Me <3 Dior and the Diva Points Program), I have to share my new favorite and go-to product for highlight, blush, definition (I'm also thinking bronze glow), and all-day care free one-time application: eight shades of pure creativity in these Shimmering Facial Whips from e.l.f.!

e.l.f. Shimmering Facial Whips in Spotlight, Lilac Petal, Golden Peach, Citrus, and Pink Lemonade
First, the beauty of these is a great range that can be applied sheerly to quite opaque. I personally own and use five shades: (from left) Spotlight, Lilac Petal, Golden Peach, Citrus, Pink Lemonade; and there are three others: Camilia, Persimmon, Toasted. Their consistency is rich and creamy, which at first made me nervous for blending out the richer colors.

A Treat for Everyone Except Super Germophobes - e.l.f. Hypershine Glosses

e.l.f. Hypershine Gloss from bottom to top: Blossom, Joy, and Poinsettia Red

So far I haven't been able to narrow down what makes me like a lip gloss and what I definitely don't want in one. I've thought about that kind of thing a lot this week: do I like the e.l.f. products I like because they are cheap or because they are good products in their own right? Officially, I never recommend things I don't like.

There have certainly been some products from brands (almost all brands) that aren't worth anything to me, even a dollar. And after reviewing all the posts from this week, I think I've been very true to what products I would really recommend to others and which ones I wouldn't. With that in mind, I do want to just outright say that these are my favorite e.l.f. lip product (since the cream liners are dead tied overall).

Hypershine glosses are about as sticky/tacky as Chanel Glossimers, but instead of having the shimmer-explosion effect of Glossimers, Hypershines look subtle and have a glassy, mirror-like shine, just as described online at purchase.
Left to Right: Poinsettia Red, Joy, and Blossom
